Mathematics and science are vital parts of education and of our everyday lives. Not a day goes by when we do not utilize our mathematical and scientific knowledge. It is fundamental for our students to be exposed to such knowledge through dynamic hands-on and engaging activities. Our students learn basic mathematical knowledge such as geometry (shapes), numbers, telling time, measurements, and patterns to enrich their understanding of life around them. These lessons are prepared by the teachers to visually stimulate and provide a positive learning experience. The students are encouraged to participate in the lessons by volunteering to answer simple questions.
Through the science lessons, our students are challenged to make close and detailed observations about their surroundings and various age-appropriate experiments that take place inside and outside of class. They are taught to utilize all of their five senses and obtain a better overall understanding of basic scientific principles. This new mathematical and scientific knowledge will allow our students to apply their imaginations to different aspects of their lives.
It is important to recognize that preschoolers have an informal knowledge of mathematics and science that can be built on and reinforced. However, it is important to keep it in mind that, just as is true of older children, not all preschoolers will enter school with equivalent knowledge and capabilities. During the preschool years young children’s natural curiosity and eagerness to learn can be capitalized on to develop a joy and excitement in learning and applying concepts and skills. Furthermore, our program is designed in line with the guidelines and standards of the major professional organizations; NAEYC, NCTM, NSTA, AAAS, and NRC. |
